Course Content and Structure:

The Introduction to Film Education course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills to use film effectively within educational settings. The course aligns with the development of a Film and Screen Curriculum for Scottish schools and helps participants understand the central role of film in young people's lives.


Program Duration:

The course lasts for three months, with a total of 5 live online workshops taking place every second Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. Participants are also expected to actively engage in online discussions with their peers throughout the course.


Modules:

  • Film Analysis Workshop: Participants learn to lead educational workshops on film analysis, focusing on key terminology, narrative, and mise-en-scene.
  • Story Development Workshop: Participants learn to run workshops on story development and gain an understanding of storytelling principles.
  • Practical Filmmaking: Participants gain basic filmmaking skills and learn how to use practical filmmaking equipment in educational settings.
  • Curriculum for Excellence and SQA Benchmarks: The course links the use of film to the Curriculum for Excellence and SQA benchmarks.
  • Film and Social Justice: Participants explore the unique potential of film to raise literacy attainment and enact social justice in the classroom.

Assessment:

The course assessment involves developing a unit of work, presenting it to peers, and writing a reflective essay of 2500 words. Completing the assessment allows participants to apply for Professional Recognition through the GTCS.

The course is led by Dr. Robert Munro, Programme Leader in Film and Media, and Patrick Boxall, Lecturer in Education. The course may also involve contributions from Screen Scotland's Film Education Team.
