Program Overview


This Filmmaking in the Classroom Short Course at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, is designed for educators in Scotland. It provides technical and creative filmmaking skills, project management techniques, and explores film language in the Scottish curriculum. The hybrid program includes in-person and online sessions, with assessment based on a reflective journal and a short film.

  • Target Audience:
  • Primary, secondary, and special school teachers in Scotland, anyone working regularly in educational settings. No filmmaking prerequisite needed.
  • Objectives:
  • Learn technical and creative filmmaking skills, develop project management skills, plan, shoot, and edit a short film, explore film language and its place in Scotland's curriculum, manage film projects with young learners.
  • Content:
  • Technical skills: camera operation, sound, editing, post-production processes.
  • Creative skills: short film writing, project management.
  • Filmmaking basics: narrative, story development, film language.
  • Film in Scottish curriculum.
  • Managing film projects with young learners.
  • Structure:
  • Hybrid model: in-person and online sessions.
  • Three in-person sessions at SEE Edinburgh: full day (9-5pm), 6-hour session (9-3pm), and 2-hour editing session (10-2pm).
  • Remaining sessions: 2-hour online evening sessions.
  • Duration: 4 months, October 2023 - February 2024.

Assessment:

  • 2000-word reflective journal.
  • Short film (max 5 minutes) with production documents.

Teaching:

  • Delivered by Dr. Laura Findlay from Screen Education Edinburgh (SEE) with support from film tutors at SEE.
  • Hybrid teaching: in-person and online sessions.
  • Practical workshops, collaboration sessions, and editing sessions.

Careers:

  • Enhance teaching practice with filmmaking skills.
  • Develop new pedagogical approaches using film in the classroom.
  • Create engaging learning experiences for students using film.

Entry Requirements:


Applicants with a UK or equivalent qualification:


For students with a UK undergraduate degree in any subject:

  • Applicants should hold a good honours degree (normally 2:2 or above) from a UK university or equivalent.
  • Applicants with a lower degree classification or those from non-traditional backgrounds may be considered on an individual basis if they can demonstrate relevant experience and/or qualifications.

Relevant experience:

  • Applicants with relevant experience in the field of film and media education or filmmaking may be considered, even if they do not hold a formal qualification.
  • Relevant experience could include teaching film or media in a school or college setting, working in the film or media industry, or volunteering with a film or media organization.

Applicants with an international qualification:


International qualifications:

  • Applicants with an international qualification should demonstrate that their qualification is equivalent to a UK honours degree.
  • Applicants may also need to meet the English language requirements (see below).

English language requirements:


All applicants:

  • All applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University's English language requirements.
  • This means achieving a minimum score of 6.5 in the IELTS test, with no element below 6.0.
  • Applicants can also provide proof of their English language skills from other recognized English language tests.
