Program Overview


The Operating Department Practice (ODP) program at Coventry University prepares students to become competent and confident ODPs, eligible for professional registration with the HCPC. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and clinical placements, graduates are equipped for careers in anaesthetics, surgery, and post-anaesthetic care in both NHS and private sector settings. Program Outline


Degree Overview:

The ODP role extends beyond the operating department to encompass non-traditional acute areas such as the emergency department, Interventional Radiology, cardiac catheterisation, MRI and CT scanning as well as endoscopy units.


Course objectives:

  • Become a safe, confident, and competent ODP: Students are provided with a platform to grow in their clinical skills and abilities, enabling them to effectively contribute as part of the perioperative multidisciplinary team in all areas of operating department practice.
  • Gain eligibility for professional registration: The course leads to eligibility to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), enabling you to practice as an ODP (additional costs and requirements may apply).
  • Develop skills and experience through placements: Mandatory practice placements (organized by the university) allow students to apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios, enhancing their confidence and competence.
  • Fulfill NHS Learning Support Fund eligibility: Home students can receive a £5,000 annual payment through the NHS Learning Support Fund (which does not require repayment), with additional bursaries for those incurring childcare costs.

Outline:


Year One:

  • Introduction to the three ODP roles: Anaesthetics, surgery, and recovery
  • Key principles in safe and effective patient care taught alongside exploration of basic principles of pharmacology
  • Relevant anatomy, physiology, and the maintenance of homeostasis explored alongside common illnesses and altered pathophysiology
  • Simulated activities, role play, and clinical skills development

  • A-Level: BBC
  • GCSE: Minimum 5 GCSEs graded 9-4 including English, Mathematics, and Science (or equivalent qualifications).
  • BTEC: DMM in a Health or Sport-based subject
  • IB Diploma: 29 points to include 14 points at Higher Level
  • Access Diploma: The Access to HE Diploma in a Health or Science-related subject to include 15 credits at Distinction and 30 credits at Merit.
  • Plus GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 4/C or above.

EU (without EU Support Bursary):

  • All requirements listed above for UK and EU (with EU Support Bursary)
