Program Overview


Master of Science in Accounting Program

The University of La Verne's Master of Science in Accounting program is designed to prepare students for a challenging and rewarding career in accounting. The program helps students develop valuable skills and knowledge that can be immediately applied to real-world problems and career opportunities.


Program Overview

The Master of Science in Accounting program requires completion of eight core courses and two electives for a total of 10 courses (30 units). The program takes one to two years to complete and can be taken on a part- or full-time schedule. Classes are taught year-round, and there are five start terms per year. Evening courses are available.


Curriculum

The curriculum includes the following core courses:


  • ACCT 501: Financial Accounting Issues
  • ACCT 504: Corporate Taxation
  • ACCT 507: Advanced Cost Accounting
  • ACCT 508: Governmental and Not for Profit Accounting
  • ACCT 510: Advanced Auditing
  • ACCT 543: Acct Ethics & Prof Resp
  • ACCT 595: Accounting Research and Communication
  • ACCT 596: Accounting Graduate Seminar

Students must also select two electives from the following options:


  • ACCT 506: Forensic Accounting
  • BUS 505: Accounting for Specialized Entities
  • BUS 530: Financial Management
  • MDA 501: SAS Programming Essentials
  • MDA 502: Multivariate Statistical Analysis

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Master of Science in Accounting program, applicants must meet the following criteria:


  • Completed Admission Application and application fee
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited US college or university, or its international equivalent with a preferred GPA of 3.0
  • Applicants with lower GPAs may be required to submit Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores

  • Letters of recommendation may be required if a definitive decision cannot be made on the basis of the application materials listed above

International Students

Students without a degree from an English-speaking institution, where English is the primary language of instruction and of the geographic area, must establish minimal proficiency in English by accomplishing one of the following:


  • TOEFL of 79 (iBT), 213 CBT, or 550 PBT or above
  • Duolingo 110 or above
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or above
  • GRE verbal score of 146
  • Satisfactory completion of La Verne's English proficiency test
  • Satisfactory completion of prerequisite courses at La Verne as indicated by a placement examination

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is available at the University of La Verne for local, eligible taxpayers to receive free tax services. The VITA program at ULV is serviced by ULV students trained in preparing basic tax returns.


Master of Science Accounting 4+1 Program

The Master of Science Accounting 4+1 program is designed for BS and BA accounting students. The program helps students prepare for a challenging and rewarding career as an accounting professional practicing public accountancy, working in diverse business industries, or providing specialized services for nonprofits and governmental entities.


Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the 4+1 Accounting program, students must meet the following requirements:


  • Must be a current full-time undergraduate student majoring in Accounting
  • GPA 2.75 overall and in the major
  • All MS Accounting prerequisite and foundation requirements must be met prior to applying to the program
  • Must earn grades of B or better in ACCT 301 Intermediate Accounting I and ACCT 302 Intermediate Accounting II
  • Must earn grades of C or better in each of the following courses: ACCT 201 Fundamentals of Accounting I, ACCT 202 Fundamentals of Accounting II, BUS 270 Statistics, BUS 330 Business Finance, BUS 360 Principles of Marketing, ECON 220 Economic Analysis I, ECON 221 Economic Analysis II, and MGMT 300 Principles of Management
  • Must earn a grade of C+ or better in each of the following courses: ACCT 401 Auditing, ACCT 402 Advanced Accounting, and ACCT 308 Federal Taxation I

Program Structure

A maximum of 15 units of MS Accounting courses can be taken in the senior year with a maximum of 9 units in each semester. MS Accounting course options during the senior year may include MACC 404 Corporate Taxation, MACC 406 Forensic Accounting, MACC 407 Advanced Cost Accounting, MACC 408 Governmental and Not for Profit Accounting, MACC 443 Accounting Ethics and Professional Responsibilities.
