Introduction to the Irish Legal System (Taster Course from DLSP)

Overview

This module will develop the understanding of the branches of the legal profession, their key roles and functions and how they are inter-related.


Why Study the Irish Legal System at Griffith College?

This module aims to introduce students to the following:


  • Both what ‘law’ is and the difference between a common law and a civil law system.
  • The historical development of the Irish legal system and in particular the influence of the reception of the Constitution of 1937.
  • The doctrine of precedent and increase the learners’ awareness of the structure and jurisdiction of the various courts in the Irish court system.
  • The knowledge of the sources of law , in particular, the Irish Constitution of 1937.
  • Introduce learners to the** concept of legal reasoning**.

This module will develop the understanding of the branches of the legal profession, their key roles and functions and how they are inter-related. Topics covered:

  • Sources of Law – including both national and international law
  • The Irish Courts – structure and jurisdiction of the various courts in the Irish court system
  • Legal Personnel – the different roles and functions of legal professionals
  • The Doctrine of Precedent – understanding the role of precedent in Irish law
  • International Law – with a specific focus on European Union Law and the European Convention on Human Rights
  • Legal Research – developing the skills to navigate legal resources
  • Legal Writing – acquiring the ability to write effectively in the legal context

Students who complete this module may wish to continue their studies in law at Griffith College by applying for the Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice course. This program offers a pathway to a career in the legal profession.
