Program Overview
Data Science Program
The Bachelor of Science in Data Science program at Wentworth Institute of Technology is designed to equip students with a foundation in statistics and computer science, as well as data-insightful topics such as machine learning, data mining, and data visualization.
Program Overview
The program provides hands-on training on data science software for the data analysis lifecycle, including data acquisition, data management, data analysis, model development and deployment, and visualization. Students acquire the skillset to be competitive in the job market and apply these skills directly in the work environment through two required co-op work semesters.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes courses in:
- Computer Science I & II
- Engineering Calculus I & II
- Discrete Mathematics
- Data Structures
- Algorithms
- Data Science Fundamentals
- Statistics courses
- Linear Algebra
- Data Mining
- Databases
- Electives in desired area of study
Program Structure
The program is available in both 3-year and 4-year options. The 4-year program includes:
- Year 1: Foundation courses in Computer Science and Mathematics
- Year 2: Expansion of knowledge with courses in Data Structures, Algorithms, and Data Science Fundamentals
- Year 3: Dive into Data Mining and Databases, with electives in desired area of study
- Year 4: Second required co-op, with remaining courses focusing on rounding out data science knowledge through electives
The 3-year program is an accelerated version, with a similar structure but condensed into three years.
Accreditation
The School of Computing & Data Science will seek accreditation from ABET after graduating its first cohort of students.
Career Potential
The Data Science program has strong career potential, with Harvard Business Review naming data science "the sexiest job of the 21st century" and Glassdoor ranking it as the #3 job in the United States. The median salary is $110,000, with high opportunities for advancements and salary.
Career Outcomes
Wentworth Data Science graduates obtain well-paying jobs in a range of fields, with a median starting salary of $72,500 and an average hourly co-op pay of $22.88. Through Wentworth's strong network of employers, Data Science students obtain professional experience during their two required cooperative education semesters.
