  • Provide a comprehensive curriculum that integrates the latest research and advancements in healthcare.
  • Offer a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters student success and professional development.

Description:

This program combines years of experience with high-tech facilities, offering a blend of traditional lectures and hands-on problem-based learning. Students engage in small group sessions, clinical scenarios, early patient contact, and placements in hospitals and communities. The curriculum covers a range of areas, from basic sciences to clinical specialties, allowing students to follow their individual interests and prepare for their chosen career paths.


Outline:

The program is structured in three phases across four years:


Year 1 (Phase 1):

  • Introduction to applied biological sciences and key topics related to normal biological structures and functions, the impact of illness, and environmental/social factors on health.
  • Focus on developing clinical and communication skills through practical anatomy teaching, small group work, and patient contact.
  • Clinical placements begin in September, with weekly sessions at a primary care setting and bi-weekly sessions with a GP tutor.

Years 2-3 (Phase 2):

  • Increased focus on clinical placements with rotations lasting 6-10 weeks across various hospital settings (including inner-city and out-of-firm placements).
  • Exposure to diverse patient demographics and specialized services in different locations.

Year 4 (Phase 3):

  • Placements in emergency medicine, intensive care, surgical and anaesthetics departments, as well as an eight-week GP apprenticeship with independent patient consultations under GP supervision.
  • Completion of final SSCs and the Intermediate Life Support qualification.
  • Six-week elective opportunity in the UK or overseas for enriching cultural and medical experiences.
  • Three-week student assistantship shadowing a Foundation Year (FY1) doctor in preparation for own FY1 training.

Assessment:

Students' progress is monitored through continuous assessment and regular examinations, with final exams conducted each year. A scheme of merits and distinctions recognizes outstanding performance. Special ability in examinations and specific subjects is also rewarded through prizes.


Teaching:

The program utilizes a diverse range of teaching methods to ensure a stimulating and engaging learning experience:

  • Lectures and symposia for knowledge dissemination.
  • Extensive hands-on laboratory work for practical experience.
  • Independent projects fostering critical thinking and research skills.

The program recently received funding from Health Education England to enhance content delivery through a blended approach utilizing premium digital content alongside active and social learning principles.
