Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This MSc program aims to equip you with the skills and techniques required by industrial mathematics, focusing on modelling, simulating and solving problems of industrial relevance.

Objectives:

  • To equip graduates with the necessary mathematical techniques for application within industry.
  • To provide a strong theoretical foundation and skills in key areas like numerical methods, mathematical modelling, fluid mechanics.
  • To develop the ability to work effectively in a team.

Outline:

This program provides a solid foundation in the core areas of mathematics relevant to the industry.

Semester 1:

  • Compulsory: Programming and Numerical Methods (exploring numerical methods for differential equations)
  • Compulsory: Mathematical Modelling I (developing skillsets in mathematical modelling and group work)
  • Compulsory: Fluid Mechanics (deriving fundamental equations of fluid mechanics and exploring applications in diverse areas)
  • Optional: Functional Analysis (introducing functional analysis and exploring the power of abstract mathematical concepts)
  • Optional: Asymptotic Methods (introducing concepts of small and large parameters in equations and analyzing differential equations and integrals)
  • Optional: Stochastic Models in Finance (providing the mathematical background in security market and derivative industry)
  • Optional: Mathematical Methods for Interdisciplinary Sciences (developing students' mathematical skills and applying them to models in various interdisciplinary areas)

Semester 2:

  • Compulsory: Theory of PDEs (gaining familiarity with qualitative theory of linear PDEs, and studying modern methods)
  • Compulsory: Static and Dynamic Optimisation (gaining familiarity with theory and techniques in static and dynamic optimization)
  • Compulsory: Mathematical Modelling II (developing skillsets in mathematical modelling and group work)
  • Optional: Spectral Theory (introducing spectral theory and exploring the power of abstract mathematical concepts)
  • Optional: Statistics for Large Data (learning both supervised and unsupervised methods for learning from data, implementing them using real data, and using the R statistical programming language)
  • Optional: Computational Methods in Finance (teaching numerical methods and associated theory for modelling of financial options, using computers to implement them, and interpreting numerical results)

Summer:

  • Compulsory: Industrial Modelling Research Project (developing independent work in mathematics, with an industrial or engineering company, or at the University of Loughborough)

Assessment:

This program employs various assessment methods including exams, reports, individual and group projects, and oral presentations.
