Program Overview
This PhD project aims to investigate the structure of mathematical skills, exploring whether a domain-specific construct exists beyond general intelligence. Using psychometric studies and latent variable modeling, the project will disentangle the common core of mathematical skills and its relationship to general intelligence. The findings will inform mathematical cognition studies, providing insights into the links between elementary number processing and mathematical abilities.

This PhD project will explore the underlying structure of mathematical skills and answer the questions of whether there is a single domain-specific construct (not accounted for by domain-general skills such as general intelligence) explaining mathematical skills in different domains and whether the common core of mathematical skills can be distinguished from domain-general skills such as general intelligence. The project will be conducted using large-scale psychometric studies, in which participants will solve different mathematical tasks. Latent variable modelling will be used to disentangle the structure of mathematical skills. The results will then be used to inform studies in mathematical cognition, aiming at looking at links between elementary number processing and mathematical skills by providing a better understanding and potentially a better operationalization of the measured outcome.
