Study a Master of Management – MMgt

The Master of Management is a professional, relevant and contemporary qualification. Management involves both being able to work independently and making management decisions. But, you also need to be able to work with and direct teams of people.

The Master of Management will help you develop the skills you need for effective management of people within your organisation and externally.

The core course offers an introduction to business management in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the skills, tools and techniques needed for success in professional business practice. We also have a broad range of business management specialisations to suit your interest and you will upskill in the core fundamentals of whichever area you choose.

• In the 2023 Graduate Destination Survey, 98% of responding Master of Management graduates were in employment, and were employed across a wide range of sectors, from financial services to public administration to telecommunications.

A MMgt is a good fit if you:

Entry requirements

Admission to Massey

All students must meet university entrance requirements to be admitted to the University.

Specific requirements

To enter the Master of Management you will:

• have been awarded or qualified for a relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, having achieved a grade average of at least B- in the highest level courses, or
• have been awarded or qualified for a Postgraduate Diploma in Business with a B- grade average, or equivalent.

If you have a Postgraduate Diploma in Business as outlined above, you may apply for credit towards Part One of the qualification, in a single subject. If you are granted credit, the degree will be awarded without a subject.

Students who have completed the equivalent of at least 60 credits at postgraduate level and attained a minimum grade average of C+ or higher may be exempted from the requirement to complete the core course. They will then be required to complete an alternative course of 30 credits, which may be in the intended specialisation or a related subject.

You will need to provide copies of all official academic transcripts for studies taken at all universities other than Massey University.

English language requirements

To study this qualification you must meet Massey University's English language standards.

Time limits for Honours, Distinction and Merit

Where your qualification is completed within the stated time limit and to a high standard, you may be able to graduate with Distinction or Merit.

Maximum time limits for completion

There are maximum time limits to complete some undergraduate and all postgraduate qualifications. If you do not complete within the maximum time, you may be required to re-apply for the qualification if you wish to continue your studies.

Structure of the Master of Management

If you study full-time, you’ll take 120 credits per year or 60 credits per semester.

For progression to Part Two of the Master of Management, you will need to achieve a B- grade average across the Part One courses.

If you have completed at least 60 credits of postgraduate study with a minimum grade average of C+ you will not need to complete the core course in Schedule A. However, this is not a credit and you must complete an approved alternative course/s totalling 30 credits in your subject, or an alternative course from Schedule B, or equivalent. You will need to add the course using the Special Permission function on the Course Enrolment page in your student homepage.

If you are admitted directly to Part Two of the Master of Management on the basis of credit for Part One, you will be awarded the qualification without a subject.

Courses and specialisations

Key terms

Courses

• Each qualification has its own specific set of courses. Some universities call these papers. You enrol in courses after you get accepted into Massey. Course code
• Each course is numbered using 6 digits. The fourth number shows the level of the course. For example, in course 115111, the fourth number is a 1, so it is a 100-level course (usually studied in the first year of full-time study). Credits
• Each course is worth a number of credits. You combine courses (credits) to meet the total number of credits needed for your qualification. Specialisations
• Some qualifications let you choose what subject you'd like to specialise in. Your major or endorsement is what you will take the majority of your courses in.

Credit summary

180 credits

• Part One Schedule A core courses – 30 credits
• Part One Schedule B subject courses – 90 credits
• Part Two Schedule B – 60 credits

A specialisation (subject) is compulsory and requires 150 credits. This includes compulsory subject courses in Part One and Two.

Advanced entry: Those who have already completed specified qualifications in advance of the minimum entry requirements and have been granted credit for it, may be able to complete this degree in 60 - 120 credits.

There are regulations around completion of Part One before progressing to Part Two.

Course planning key

Prerequisites

• Courses that need to be completed before moving onto a course at the next level. For example, a lot of 200-level courses have 100-level prerequisite courses. Corequisites
• Courses that must be completed at the same time as another course are known as corequisite courses. Restrictions
• Some courses are restricted against each other because their content is similar. This means you can only choose one of the offered courses to study and credit to your qualification.

2026 tuition fees

• Domestic students: $10,652
• International students: $39,840

Tuition fees are estimates only. The exact fees charged will depend on which courses you select at the time of enrolment. The estimates are for full-time study (120 credits). Fees are in New Zealand dollars and include Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The estimates do not include the Student Services Fee. This fee is $1,164 for on-campus students and $948 for distance students for full-time study (120 credits). For more information about this fee and other fees you may need to pay, see non-tuition fees.

There may also be charges for things such as study resources, software, trips and contact workshops.
