Content:

  • Objectives: Meet STCW requirements for officers in charge of a navigational watch on a ship fitted with ECDIS.
  • Modules:
  • Operate ECDIS equipment
  • Use the navigational functions of ECDIS
  • Select and assess relevant information and take proper action
  • Acquire and develop a knowledge and understanding of the basic principles governing the safe operation of ECDIS
  • Understand ECDIS data and their presentation
  • Understand system-related limitations and potential dangers
  • Generate and maintain displays
  • Operate all basic navigational functions and all specific functions for route planning and route monitoring
  • Select and use the navigational data and display the data in the appropriate manner
  • Ability to perform loading and updating
  • Recognize and analyse nautical alarms during route planning and route monitoring as well as sensor alarms
  • Assess the impact of the performance limits of sensors on the safe use of ECDIS
  • Understand the importance of a back-up system and its limited performance
  • Assess errors, inaccuracies and ambiguities caused by improper data management
  • Awareness of errors in displayed data, errors of interpretation
  • Risk of over-reliance on ECDIS and be able to take proper action.
  • Knowledge of the principal types of electronic chart
  • Knowledge legal aspects in the operational use and management of ECDIS

Entry Requirements:


EU Home Students:

  • Participants are required to have navigational experience on vessels over 500 GT.
  • Applicants must hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Master or Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) on a ship of 500 GT or more.

International Overseas Students (Outside the EU):

  • Participants are required to have navigational experience on vessels over 500 GT.
  • Applicants must hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Master or Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) on a ship of 500 GT or more.
  • However, for international students who are not native English speakers, it is recommended to check with the institution for any specific language tests or requirements they may have.
  • This course is designed for mariners who need to complete the STCW requirements for ECDIS training.
  • The course is typically delivered over 5 consecutive days, 8.30am-5.00pm.
  • The course can only take 6 students at a time.
  • Additional courses can be run in exceptional circumstances.
