Program Overview

This program is designed for current members of the fire service who want to become full-service, operations-level firefighters. It is open to fire service personnel only.

The program allows departments to show that their firefighters have firefighting skills that exceed the British Columbia Fire Service Minimum Training Standards.

What You Need to Graduate

This program consists of 12 courses.


  • Students have 12 months to complete a course from the date of registration.
  • Students have up to three years (36 months) to complete all the courses in the program to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Program Format

We deliver the courses through an in-house training model that involves a mix of online and in-person courses. The in-person courses take place at a JIBC campus or designated firefighter training facility in the community.


Upcoming Intakes

There are no application deadlines or set start dates. Fire department training officers can submit program applications for their members anytime.


Exams & Evaluations

Online Final Theory Examination
  • Online final theory examinations must be requested for each student by the department training officer (or department designate) and must be proctored.
  • Students must be registered in the course before training officers can request the exams.
  • Students must complete all FIRE-1057 Knowledge Quizzes before taking the final exam.
  • Students must achieve a minimum passing grade of 60% on all quizzes and the final theory exam.
Practical Skills Evaluations
  • Skills Evaluation requests are only available to students currently registered in FIRE-1058.
  • Skills Evaluations must be requested for each student by the department training officer (or department designate) and must be evaluated by a JIBC-certified evaluator.
  • Each student must achieve a minimum passing grade of 75% in a selection of mandatory and randomly selected skills.

We will supply course manuals when students attend class. If additional books or other materials are required, we will let students know after they are accepted into the program.


How to Apply

STEP one - Determine Eligibility

This program is open to fire service personnel only. Prerequisites are based on fire department criteria. The training officer or department designate must register students.


STEP two - Submit Your Completed Program Application Form

Complete the program application form and submit it to the Admissions Office.


STEP three - Register for Courses

After submitting the program application form, students can register for courses by completing the course registration form and submitting it to the Admissions Office.


Required Documents

Training officers must submit their members' program application form to the Admissions office with a $75 application fee per student (if applicable).

Q: What is the Withdrawal Policy for this program?

A: There is a $50 non-refundable administrative fee per student from the date of a course registration form is received. The course fees are non-refundable from the date the student and/or the Training Assistant information is emailed. Registration/Course fees are non-transferable.
