Program Overview

The Exterior Fire Fighter Operations program is designed for members of the fire service who want to gain the competencies for exterior firefighting with credit towards their NFPA 1001 firefighter certification.

What You Need to Graduate

This program consists of four courses, which are a mix of online and hands-on face-to-face courses. Students have 12 months to complete a course from the date of registration. Students have up to one year (12 months) to complete all the courses in the program to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Courses in this program are primarily offered online.

Upcoming Intakes

There are no specific application deadlines or set start dates. Fire department training officers can submit program applications for their members at any time.

Exams & Evaluations

Online Final Theory Examination

Online final theory examinations must be requested for each student by the department training officer (or department designate) and must be proctored. Students must be registered in the course before training officers can request the exams. Students must have successfully completed all three FIRE-1053 Knowledge Quizzes before asking to take the final exam.

Students must achieve a minimum passing grade of 60% on all quizzes and the final theory exam.

Practical Skills Evaluations

Skill evaluation requests are only available to students currently registered in FIRE-1054. Skill evaluations must be requested for each student by the department training officer (or department designate) and must be evaluated by a JIBC-certified evaluator.

Each student will be required to complete a selection of mandatory and randomly selected skills successfully.

• Skills Evaluation 1 - Module 1 & 2 (3 mandatory skills and 1 random skill)
• Skills Evaluation 2 - Module 3 & 4 (2 mandatory skills and 2 random skills)
• Skills Evaluation 3 - Module 5 & 6 (2 mandatory skills and 2 random skills)
• Final Skills Evaluation - All Exterior Modules (3 mandatory skills)

Students must achieve a minimum passing grade of 75%.

Practical skills evaluations will be based on a weighted scale: Critical, Major and General.

Textbooks & Supplies

Course manuals are supplied when you attend class. If additional books or other materials are required, you will be advised of the details after you are accepted into the program.

How to Apply

STEP 1 - Determine Eligibility

This program is open to fire service personnel only. Prerequisites are based on fire department criteria. Students must be registered by their training officer or department designate.

An application fee of $75 will be charged per student for the level of service training you request (Exterior, Interior OR Full Service).

If a student is already registered into the Basic, FFI or FFI & II, this fee will be waived.

STEP 2 - Submit Your Completed Program Application Form

Complete the program application form and submit it to the Admissions Office.

STEP 3 - Register for Courses

After submitting your program application form, you can register for your courses by completing the course registration form and submitting it to the Admissions Office.

Required Documents

Training officers must submit their members' program application form to the Admissions office with a $75 application fee per student.

Q: How long do I have to complete a course?

A: Students have 12 months to complete a course from the date of registration.

Q: How long do I have to complete this program?

A: Students have up to one year (12 months) to complete all the courses in the Exterior Firefighter Operations program to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Q: What is the Withdrawal Policy for this program?

A: There is a $50 non-refundable administrative fee per student on the date that a course registration form is received. The course fees are non-refundable from the date the student and/or Training Assistant information is emailed. Registration/Course fees are non-transferable.

Q: What are the start dates?

A: For course registration requests received between the 1st and the 15th of the month, the course start date will be the 1st of the following month.

For course registration requests received between the 16th and the last day of the month, the course start date will be the 15th of the following month.

Q: Who do I contact with questions?

Q: When are the Program Completion Certificates issued?

A: JIBC Certificates of Completion for Fire & Safety Division (FSD) programs are printed and mailed out to graduates on a quarterly basis. Certificates are produced in February, May, August, and November for students who have completed the program in the relevant preceding three-month period. If you do not receive your certificate, contact FSD.
