Overview:

The UCOL Certificate in Introductory Photography teaches how to use a camera to express creative ideas. Learn beginner's skills in camera equipment use, composition, lighting, digital image processing, and final image presentation. This introductory course serves as a basic foundation before enrolling in more advanced study within UCOL's Photography department if the student chooses as the pathway may allow such advancement.

Program Description:

This practical course teaches foundational skills needed to advance professionally for professional employment photography in its beginning stages but also assists budding marketing creatives and the socially networked public alike who wish to improve photo presentation for those purposes. To participate, UCOL students may enroll with their issued digital camera at their disposal or may choose to borrow with a loaned camera from the equipment pool accessible in the Photography department (upon request with instructors present). The Photography department boasts industry-grade software and hardware to facilitate student proficiency within the arts. Photography studios and Apple IMacs equipped at the highest quality level for photographic and creative processing purposes are available; all of these may be used by photography beginners through participation in the Certificate program in Introductory Photography.


Outline


Content:

This beginner's-level program covers composition concepts, camera types and functions including appropriate selection of accessories within the context of proper use along with the fundamentals concerning exposure; aperture, shutter speed, and focusing settings as well as white balance settings; also covering the use of natural light when working with studio environments and Photoshop basics (a primer intended for processing imagery in the digital editing process). To understand photography, it must also be historically contextualized, so also covered to a basic extent during the course are influences upon the modern practices of photography including conceptual visual research including initial brief analysis leading to the final stage of concept formulation as translated or extrapolated out; in other words, the student takes in information relating to the subject; then goes into the process formulating concept development which goes into creation via practical process/execution using camera equipment; then is brought to resolution with final editing processes such as those available via basic applications within the industry standard (currently) Adobe Products suite like Photoshop which the participants in the Certificate program will get familiarized for proficiency purposes while enrolled or in the course of participation).


Structure:

The course content is divided across twelve sessions including 10 classroom sessions in total divided between weekday night lectures plus those delivered by weekends along with a two-week additional learning break after session six (6). To clarify those days, they are as following with no other session meeting outside these sessions: sessions 1, 2, 3, and four (4); a brief two week "break" during which there also are no sessions: (5 or 6) on session 7 will occur before the final four are in the final order: with eight (8), then nine (9), ten (10), followed by eleven then last (12th session). Those sessions take place once weekly except (as listed before above) for sessions #s that fall (1, 2, 7 on Monday, (3 on Fridays then again the remaining sessions at #s (of those listed above as part of the total for all sessions in attendance are) 4,8 at a time: once per every Tuesday: the 1st listed number in the order 4 then the other 8 for session (8/eight)). Assessment

The Certificate in Introductory Photography is assessed via practical assignments involving the use of digital SLR or DSLM photo equipment (digital single lens reflex or, otherwise and similarly digital single mirrorless if necessary to use equipment of that type instead that the student does the following (these will be graded: the assignments): with these assignments, create various styles which shall include portraiture - which is likely used for self-portraiture by student participant or possibly classmate participation (either will qualify), then still-life images which feature inanimate matter as the primary elements for composition/subject within frame but otherwise and then last product photography which should also be included which can range but may include as subject-matter; food, drinks, beverage - that is, photography which is or relates towards commercial work in some part and of or about products on sale: in short- this assignment is intended for that as its subject unless or otherwise specified by course/program instructors during the course of class sessions on those days of their meetings as discussed or outlined in the earlier portions of this document including other portions but in the "content" section when previously stated at the beginning when first listed within any answer response from any program run via AI, but possibly human agent-assisted language learning (LLM models may include human subject or human expert: subject-oriented to improve its training: an instructor to improve outputs including when responding (outputted-text which is or resembles what you could describe as a reply).
