Program Overview

The Master of Counseling program with a concentration in School Counseling is designed to prepare students to work with school-age youth in K-12 settings as a school counselor, addressing academic and socioemotional concerns.


Program Description

The mission of the school counseling concentration within the Master of Counseling program is to prepare students to work with school-age youth in K-12 settings as a school counselor, addressing academic and socioemotional concerns. Graduates of this program hold a School Counselor, PreK-12 Certificate issued by the Arizona Department of Education and become eligible to hold a license in mental health counseling, applied for through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.

Admission Requirements

  • General university admission requirements: All students are required to meet general university admission requirements.
  • Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts.
  • Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in psychology or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.
  • Applicants are required to submit:

Program Learning Outcomes

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:


  • Apply reflective counseling skills in clinical mental health treatment practice through mock sessions and supervised site experience.
  • Apply multicultural and diversity concepts to therapeutic client practice through case studies and supervised site experience.
  • Implement school-based programming through an assessment project in culminating portfolio.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are eligible to work in a variety of school systems (public, private and charter schools) and can provide consultation and counseling services to school systems. This degree can also lead to school-based administrative positions. Graduates with this concentration, using their skill sets in both counseling and administration, are eligible for employment in a variety of settings (e.g., schools, mental health agencies and practices, and consultant agencies) and in varied roles.

Professional Licensure

ASU programs that may lead to professional licensure or certification are intended to prepare students for potential licensure or certification in Arizona. Completion of an ASU program may not meet educational requirements for licensure or certification in another state. This program leads to professional licensure in mental health counseling and a School Counselor, PreK-12 Certificate.
