Sexuality Studies (Graduate Certificate)

Program Description

The graduate certificate program in Sexuality Studies addresses the social construction, political economy, and cultures of sexualities and genders. This program interrogates heterosexuality and institutionalized heteronormativity and cisgenderism, and addresses lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirit identities and expressions as well as nonnormative sexual and gender identities that are not reflected by LGBTQ+ categories.

  • Electives (12 credit hours)

Admission Requirements

  • General University Admission Requirements: All students are required to meet general university admission requirements.
  • Applicants Must Fulfill the Requirements of Both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Applicants Must Have Earned a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Any Field from a Regionally Accredited Institution.
  • Applicants Must Have a Minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.00 (Scale is 4.00 = "A") in the Last 60 Hours of Their First Bachelor's Degree Program or a Minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.00 (Scale is 4.00 = "A") in an Applicable Master's Degree Program.
  • All Applicants Must Submit:
    • Graduate admission application and application fee
    • Official transcripts
    • A statement of purpose for pursuing the certificate
    • Proof of English proficiency

Program Learning Outcomes

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:


  • Students in the Sexuality Studies certificate will be able to analyze how sexuality has been conceptualized and understood as an interdisciplinary category of analysis across the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences.
  • Students completing the certificate will be able to articulate key theories that have contributed to the development of Sexuality Studies and their significance.
