Program Overview

The Responsible Innovation in Science, Engineering and Society (Graduate Certificate) program is designed for scientists, engineers, social scientists, creatives, research managers, technology officers, public administrators, and policy officials who seek to advance or use science and technology to improve societal outcomes and develop creative solutions to the fundamental global challenges of today's world.


Program Description

The certificate program focuses on approaches that allow students to make innovation and values work together to improve human lives. It provides students with knowledge, skills, and methods for analyzing innovation and technological systems, addressing knowledge and uncertainty in decision-making, the regulation and governance of science and technology, the uptake of science and technology in complex societal settings, and interactions between science, technology, and the public.

Degree Requirements

The program requires 15 credit hours, including the required capstone course (HSD 580).


  • Required Core (3 credit hours): HSD 540 Responsible Innovation and Research (3)
  • Electives (9 credit hours)
  • Culminating Experience (3 credit hours): HSD 580 Practicum (3)

Admission Requirements

  • General university admission requirements: All students are required to meet general university admission requirements.
  • Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the College of Global Futures.
  • Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.
  • All applicants must submit:

    • Proof of English proficiency

Program Learning Outcomes

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:


  • Students will be able to identify, analyze, and recognize an opportunity to justify and design a responsible innovation program within a science and technology initiative.
  • Students will be able to communicate, in writing and verbally, how to implement a responsible innovation program within a science policy initiative.

Global Opportunities

Studying abroad is encouraged for graduate students. Nearly all of the College of Global Futures faculty-directed programs offer graduate credit.

Recent graduates of this program have paired the certificate with technical graduate degrees to make themselves competitive for science policy jobs in the public sector. State legislatures, courts, and agencies seek employees with the perspective and ability to understand and analyze how science and technology fit into social, political, environmental, and economic contexts.
