Transborder Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies (Media and Expressive Culture), BA

The Bachelor of Arts program in transborder Chicana/o and Latina/o studies focuses on the cultural, social, political, economic, historical, health-related, and artistic experiences of Mexican-origin, Chicano, and Latino populations in the United States and the U.S.--Mexico transborder region.

Program Description

In the media and expressive culture concentration, students focus their study on the cultures of Latino communities. Students learn about the cultural diversity of Chicano, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American, and other Latino populations in the United States and their contributions to the arts by analyzing:

• film and the media
• history
• literature (novels, short stories, poetry)
• performance
• visual art

Concurrent Program Options

Students pursuing concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”) earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with their academic advisors, students can create their own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.

Accelerated Program Options

This program allows students to obtain both a bachelor's and a master's degree in as little as five years. Accelerated bachelor's plus master's degree programs are designed for high-achieving students who want the opportunity to share undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework to accelerate completion of their master's degree. These programs feature the same high-quality curriculum taught by ASU's world-renowned faculty.

  • Concurrent degree admission requirements: Freshman applicants must meet all of the following standards:
    1. minimum ABOR GPA of 3.75
    2. no English competency deficiencies
    3. 1040 SAT Reasoning or 22 ACT score
  • Transfer admission requirements: Transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 from a transfer institution.
