Program Overview

The Collaborative Learning Online (CLO) program at Ulster University is a 12-week online course that explores the use of online environments to promote collaborative learning. Participants will examine the theoretical foundations, roles of participants, and practical implementation of CLO. The course culminates in the design, implementation, and evaluation of an online learning activity based on collaborative principles.

Program Outline

  • Examine the roles of both the e-moderator and students in CLO.
  • Provide an opportunity to design, implement, and evaluate an online learning activity based on collaborative principles.

Description:

Participants will compare CLO within face-to-face and online contexts, explore relevant pedagogical approaches, and engage in collaborative "E-tivities" (Salmon, 2002). The course explores the role of the teacher as an e-moderator and guides participants in designing, implementing, and evaluating their own collaborative learning activity. Participants will engage in asynchronous and synchronous discussions, design and implement an E-tivity using online conferencing tools, and reflect on their learning journey throughout the process.

Modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Collaborative Learning Online (CLO)
  • Module 2: Theoretical Foundations of CLO
  • Module 3: Roles of the E-moderator and Students in CLO

Assessment:

Assessment Methods:

The course utilizes two written assignments:

  • Assignment 1 (30%): Reflect on contributions to online discussions (asynchronous and synchronous) and evaluate your learning journey in the context of Salmon's Five Stage Model.
  • Assignment 2 (70%):
  • Design an E-tivity using provided templates.
  • Implement the E-tivity with a small group of peers, acting as the e-moderator.
  • Evaluate the E-tivity's effectiveness using provided evaluation resources and relevant literature.
  • Include a reflective account of your learning throughout the E-tivity development process.

Teaching:

Additional mandatory costs

It is important to remember that costs associated with accommodation, travel (including car parking charges) and normal living will need to be covered in addition to tuition fees. Where a course has additional mandatory expenses (in addition to tuition fees) we make every effort to highlight them above. We aim to provide students with the learning materials needed to support their studies. Our libraries are a valuable resource with an extensive collection of books and journals, as well as first-class facilities and IT equipment. Computer suites and free Wi-Fi are also available on each of the campuses. Students choosing a period of paid work placement or study abroad as a part of their course should be aware that there may be additional travel and living costs, as well as tuition fees.
