Introduction to Construction Trades One Day Level 2 (Dual Enrolment)
Program Overview
This Dual Enrolment program provides high school students with a hands-on introduction to the construction industry. Students will learn basic skills in carpentry, joinery, civil works, and painting and decorating, and earn 32 NCEA credits upon completion. The program is free for students in Years 11, 12, or 13 and is delivered one day per week at Ara Institute of Canterbury.
Program Outline
It is a Dual Enrolment program, meaning it is free for students in Years 11, 12, or 13.
This program allows students to earn NCEA credits and experience tertiary study while still in high school.
Objectives:
- Introduce students to a variety of skills associated with carpentry, joinery, civil works, and painting and decorating sectors.
- Develop basic skills in using hand and power tools.
- Provide practical experience through project work.
Program Description:
- Delivered one day per week (Fridays, 9:00am - 3:00pm).
- Located in Woolston, Timaru.
- Places are limited and funding is dependent on availability.
- Some courses may incur costs, depending on the learner's eligibility.

Individual Modules:
- The program consists of five modules:
- Demonstrate knowledge of, select, maintain, and use hand tools for BCATS projects (5 credits)
- Lay paving blocks as a BCATS project (5 credits)
- Identify, select, use and maintain portable power tools for BCATS projects (3 credits)
- Demonstrate knowledge of and use fixed machinery in the construction of BCATS projects (3 credits)
- Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety legislation and apply safe working practices in a BCATS environment (3 credits)
- Complete a BCATS project (1 credit)

- Demonstrate knowledge of, select, maintain, and use hand tools for BCATS projects: This module will cover the safe and effective use of hand tools commonly used in the construction industry.
- Lay paving blocks as a BCATS project: This module will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to lay paving blocks.
- Identify, select, use and maintain portable power tools for BCATS projects: This module will cover the safe and effective use of portable power tools commonly used in the construction industry.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and use fixed machinery in the construction of BCATS projects: This module will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to use fixed machinery safely and effectively.
- Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety legislation and apply safe working practices in a BCATS environment: This module will cover the health and safety requirements of working in the construction industry.
- Complete a BCATS project: This module will allow students to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned throughout the program to a real-world project.
