Doctorate of Education in Education Leadership

The Doctor of Education (EdD) in Education Leadership at Western Washington University is designed for aspiring superintendents and district leaders, including assistant superintendents, executive directors, and others in district-level leadership positions in the US and Canada.

Program Structure

The EdD program is comprised of two parts:


  • Part 1: the Superintendent certificate program coursework (32 quarter credits)
  • Part 2: 30 additional credits of coursework, 10 credit research sequence, and 15 credit dissertation

Admission Requirements

  • All applicants must complete the Graduate School's application and pay the application fee.
  • Upload an unofficial transcript from each institution attended. If admitted, provide official transcripts.
  • Additional application materials include:
    • Resume
    • Three references:
      • Two from previous professors or individuals qualified to address ability to be successful academically and professionally
      • One from an education leader for whom you have worked
    • Statement of Purpose: addressing scholarly and professional objectives, and how enrollment in the Ed.D. program will advance these objectives
    • Writing Sample: academic research paper, master’s thesis, published article, literature review, case study, or professional/work-related report
    • Education Certificates: provide copies of currently held education certificates

  • August 1 for Fall
  • Fall extension for BC cohort: August 20
