About This Program

  • The MSCC program at CMU aims to graduate competent, socially conscious, reflective, evidence-based counselors who understand an individual's development through the life span and are able to meet the needs of a diverse society. In order to achieve that aim, counseling graduates are exposed to formal academic knowledge, applicable skills, and the clinical learning experiences.
  • The MSCC program is 60 credit hours in length and may be completed in less than three calendar years through a full-time course of study.
  • The digitally delivered MSCC program is CACREP-accredited as a clinical mental health program.
  • Graduates of this program will be employable in clinical counseling arenas such as correctional facilities, mental health centers, and psychiatric institutions, or be prepared to work in private practice.

Entry Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate Degree:
  • Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or its equivalent from an internationally recognized institution.
  • Cumulative GPA:
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required for admission.
  • Psychology Courses:
  • Completion of at least 18 semester hours of undergraduate coursework in psychology, including abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and statistics.
  • Transcripts:
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities must be submitted.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
  • Three letters of recommendation are required, at least two of which must be from academic references.
  • Personal Statement:
  • A personal statement of approximately 500 words is required, outlining the applicant's reasons for pursuing a career in counseling and their future career goals.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English by achieving a minimum score on the TOEFL or IELTS exam.
  • The minimum TOEFL score required is 80.
  • The minimum IELTS score required is 6.5.
