Program Overview
Introduction to the Musicology MMus Program
The University of Glasgow offers a rich and stimulating introduction to Musicology through its MMus program. This program is grounded in traditional historical and analytical methods, while also embracing recent developments in the field, including cultural musicology, practice-based research, digital research methods, and interdisciplinary criticism.
Program Structure
The MMus in Musicology is a 12-month full-time or 24-month part-time program. Students will take three core courses and three optional courses, in addition to writing a dissertation on a musical topic of their choice.
Core Courses
- Research Skills and Digital Musicology (Semester 1)
- Introduction to Musicology (Semester 1)
- Current Issues in Musicology (Semester 2)
Optional Courses
Students will take three courses in addition to the core courses. These could include:
- Thinking Through Sound and Media Options from the Honours courses in Music, and from other subjects in the School of Culture and Creative Arts (SCCA) or, with instructors approval, the entire College of Arts & Humanities.
Dissertation
Students will develop an independent piece of academic writing (12-15,000 words) in musicology under the supervision of a member of staff.
Career Prospects
This program prepares students for careers in the music and creative industries, as well as related fields such as media and broadcasting. It also provides the necessary foundation for pursuing further research in musicology in the form of a PhD.

Tuition Fees
- Home & RUK: Full-time fee Ł11,367, Part-time fee Ł1,263 per 20 credits
- International & EU: Full-time fee Ł26,460

Deposits
International and EU applicants are required to pay a deposit of Ł2,000 when an offer is made.
Additional Fees
- Fee for re-assessment of a dissertation (PGT programme): Ł370
- Submission of thesis after deadline lapsed: Ł350

Entry Requirements
- A 2.1 Honours degree (or non-UK equivalent) in any subject.
- A 2.2 Honours degree will be considered where supported by relevant experience. Substantial, directly relevant experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications.
English Language Requirements
For applicants from non-English speaking countries, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. Accepted English language qualifications include:

Application Deadlines
The University has an application process with application rounds. The deadlines for these rounds are:
- Round 1: 1 October 2025 to 5 November 2025
- Round 2: 6 November 2025 to 17 December 2025
- Round 3: 18 December 2025 to 4 February 2026
- Round 4: 5 February 2026 to 25 March 2026
- Round 5: 26 March 2026 to 13 May 2026
- Round 6: 14 May 2026 to 8 July 2026
All applications submitted by 17 December 2025 will be reviewed and processed normally, with no priority given to any geographic region. From 18 December 2025, priority will be given to applications from geographic areas that have been unable to submit applications before that point.
