Program Overview


Introduction to the Philosophy: Knowledge & Society IntM Programme

The Philosophy: Knowledge & Society IntM programme is a two-year Joint Masters Degree designed to critically examine the challenges related to the acquisition, distribution, exchange, and preservation of knowledge and information in contemporary society. This innovative programme is offered by the University of Glasgow and its world-class consortium partners, including the University of Barcelona, the University of Cologne, the University of Luxembourg, and the Free University of Amsterdam.

Programme Structure

The programme is taught over 24 months and includes at least three mobility periods, allowing students to study at different partner universities. The structure is as follows:


  • Year 1, Semester 1: Students study at the University of Glasgow, gaining an overview of key issues relevant to the study of knowledge and society.
  • Year 1, Semester 2: Students follow their first study track choice, either at the University of Barcelona (Knowledge, Language, and Logic) or the University of Cologne (Knowledge, Metaphysics, and Science).
  • Year 2, Semester 3: Students follow their second study track choice, either at the University of Luxembourg (Knowledge in the European context) or the Free University of Amsterdam (Knowledge, Morality, and Politics).
  • Year 2, Semester 4: Students return to one of the degree-awarding partner institutions for their dissertation semester, with a supervisory team constituted from the partner institutions.

Tuition Fees

  • International: Ł19,570 per annum
  • Home: Ł9,654 per annum

Deposits

All applicants are required to pay a deposit of Ł2,000 when an offer is made. The deposit is refundable under certain circumstances, with a 25% administration fee deducted unless otherwise stated.


Additional Fees

  • Fee for re-assessment of a dissertation (PGT programme): Ł370
  • Submission of thesis after deadline lapsed: Ł350
  • Registration/exam only fee: Ł170

Entry Requirements

  • Academic Requirements: 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Analytic Philosophy.
  • English Language Requirements:
    • IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall with no subtest less than 7.0
    • TOEFL (ibt, mybest or athome): 100 overall with Reading 24; Listening 24; Speaking 23; Writing 27
    • Pearsons PTE Academic: 70 overall with no subtest less than Reading 65; Listening 64; Speaking 78; Writing 72
    • Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): 185 overall with no subtest less than 185
    • Oxford English Test: 8 overall with no subtest less than 8
    • LanguageCert Academic/Academic Online: 75 overall with no subtest less than 75
    • Password Skills Plus: 7.0 overall with no subtest less than 7.0
    • Trinity College Integrated Skills in English III: Any two subtests no less than 110 and any two subtests no less than 105
    • Kaplan Test of English: No subtest less than 500
    • University of Glasgow Pre-sessional courses: Tests are accepted for 2 years following the date of successful completion.

Alternatives to English Language Qualification

  • Degree from a majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI), with the final year or 9 months at Master's level completed in that country within the last 6 years.
  • Undergraduate 2+2 degrees from a majority-English speaking country, with the final two years of study completed in that country within the last 6 years.
