Program Overview

Introduction to the Veterinary Medicine & Surgery Programme

The University of Glasgow offers a 5-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (BVMS) programme, accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). This programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in veterinary medicine, preparing them for a career in this field.

Programme Structure

The BVMS programme is structured into three phases: Foundation, Clinical, and Professional.

  • The Foundation phase (years 1 and 2) focuses on acquiring fundamental knowledge and developing skills in animal handling, communication, and clinical reasoning.
  • The Clinical phase (years 3 and 4) builds on the foundation phase, providing a broad training in key areas of veterinary professional practice, with a focus on common and important problems encountered in veterinary work.
  • The Professional phase (year 5) involves small-group participation in clinical activity, covering common species of domestic animals, and provides opportunities for students to gain first-hand experience in all aspects of veterinary work.

Special Features

The programme includes several special features, such as:

  • Extra-mural studies (EMS), which provide students with practical experience in veterinary professional environments.
  • An intercalated degree programme, allowing students to take a year out to study for an additional degree.
  • Opportunities for study abroad in all years, including participation in extra-mural studies.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the BVMS programme, applicants must meet specific entry requirements, including:

  • Academic qualifications, such as AAAAB Higher at the end of S5, plus BB Advanced Higher, or equivalent qualifications for international students.
  • Additional requirements, including Highers in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics or Mathematics, and Advanced Higher Chemistry and either Biology, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Practical experience, such as a minimum of one week's work experience in a veterinary practice.
  • An interview, which assesses the applicant's motivation, personal qualities, and understanding of the profession.

International Qualifications

The University of Glasgow accepts various international qualifications, including:

  • A-levels: AAA, with Chemistry and Biology at A-level, and GCSE English at Grade B or 5.
  • IB: 38 (6,6,6 HL), with HL subjects in Chemistry and Biology, and SL English and Physics or Mathematics at 6.
