Program Overview


Introduction to the LLM in International Competition Law & Policy

The LLM in International Competition Law & Policy provides students with the opportunity to specialize in a vital area of law that impacts commerce across the globe. The programme places the law in its economic and commercial context, through detailed coverage of US and EU law, and extensive coverage of the law in China, alongside references to other legal regimes and examples.


Why this Programme

  • Competition laws are being adopted or revised by increasing numbers of states, feature prominently in regional association agreements, and have an extremely significant impact on global and local business.
  • The programme explores offered by the well-established US and EU regimes, which are being challenged by the emergence of China as a significant jurisdiction wielding considerable influence.
  • Students will engage with the significant international debates about the role of competition law, the difficulties faced by companies complying with different laws, and the possibilities of convergence.

Programme Structure

Students will take six courses and submit a dissertation as falling within the area. Courses are delivered through a blend of lectures and seminar-style teaching.


  • Students are required to take two core courses and four optional courses.
  • Two optional courses can be chosen from other courses within the School of Law's LLM portfolio.

Entry Requirements

  • 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Law (LLB or LLM).
  • We may also consider a UK 2:1 Honours degree, or its international equivalent, in economics, political sciences, or a relevant social sciences or humanities subject area.
  • While we welcome applicants from non-legal backgrounds, it is important to note that this LLM remains a law-focused degree.

English Language Requirements

For applicants from non-English speaking countries, as defined by the UK Government, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.


  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic and Academic Online (not General Training): 7.0 overall with no subtest less than 6.5
