Program Overview


Overview

The European Union Studies MA provides an in-depth grounding in the politics and policy of the European Union. Students will explore the intricate politics, institutions, law, and policies of the European Union, addressing the international and global political context in which the EU operates.


What You'll Learn

As a student on this European Union Studies master's, you will develop knowledge of three central themes:


  • European integration
  • public policy in the EU
  • the EU as an international actor You will gain skills in:
  • social science methods and methodologies, international and regional studies politics
  • analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of principal source materials
  • planning, conducting, and communicating original research.

How You'll Learn

Teaching usually takes place on Newcastle University's city-centre campus but may include some online delivery. Small group seminars create a highly positive and intimate learning environment. Assessment methods depend on your modules and may include:


  • Dissertation

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for 2026 entry (per year)

  • Qualification: MA Full time: £11,400 (Home students), £26,500 (International students)
  • Qualification: MA Part time: £5,700 (Home students) Tuition fee increases are expected, subject to government regulations and in line with inflation. EU, other EEA, and Swiss nationals may be eligible for the 'Home' tuition fee rate and Student Finance England support, depending on their residency history.

Entry Requirements

Academic entry requirements

A 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, from all disciplines is considered. Relevant professional experience may also be considered for applicants with lower or non-standard qualifications.


English Language requirements

English language proficiency is required, with specific requirements depending on the qualification (e.g., IELTS, Pearson, Duolingo English Test, TOEFL).

The course starts in September, and there is no application closing date. International students are advised to apply at least two months before the course starts. A deposit of £1,500 is required for international students who need a visa to study in the UK.
