Program Overview

Overview

The Advanced Data Science MSc is a taught Master's degree that equips students with the knowledge and skills to solve real-world challenges and unlock powerful insights for organisations. The programme is guided by an Industrial Advisory Board, which includes representatives from leading industry partners such as Google, Meta, and JP Morgan.

What You'll Learn

The course has three phases. Phase one introduces core knowledge and skills in statistics and computer science. Phase two consists of more advanced technical modules, as well as a group project. Phase three involves an individual research project, which provides an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills, work in a research or development team, and apply data science skills to real problems.

Modules

The course includes a range of modules, such as:

  • Data Visualization
  • Image Processing
  • Data Science in the Wild (Group Project)
  • Machine Learning with Project
  • Deep Learning
  • Project and Dissertation in Data Science
  • Graduate Foundations of Statistics and Data Science Optional modules are also available, including:
    • Engineering for AI
    • Complex Data Visualization
    • Advanced AI
    • Generative AI for Businesses

How You'll Learn

The course is delivered through a range of methods, including seminars, lectures, practical classes, group and individual project work, guided independent reading, and self-directed learning. Assessment methods include dissertation, oral presentation, poster, report, and written examination.

Support

Students have access to a range of support services, including:

  • Computing resources and infrastructure
  • Wellbeing advisor support
  • Student support from academic staff, personal tutors, and research supervisors
  • Access to specialist teaching spaces and facilities in the Urban Sciences Building

Your Development

The course strengthens research skills through an extended research project and provides practical expertise by engaging with real-world challenges in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Students develop skills in:

  • Designing and implementing intelligent software systems for data-driven tasks
  • Applying computing, mathematical, and statistical techniques to data storage and analysis
  • Using modern programming languages, libraries, and AI frameworks
  • Building, training, and evaluating predictive models across a range of data domains

Your Future

The course prepares students for a wide range of careers, including roles as Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Research Data Scientist, Quantitative Analyst, and AI Specialist. Graduates have undertaken various roles, including Senior Software Engineer, Data Analyst, Data Engineer, and Data Scientist.

Industry Links

The course has strong industry links, with an Industrial Advisory Board that includes representatives from leading companies such as Google, Meta, and JP Morgan. Students have access to industry-sponsored projects and potential employment opportunities upon graduation.
