Overview

The Marine Conservation and Sustainability MSc at Newcastle University equips students with the skills and expertise to conduct impactful research, addressing real-world challenges in creating sustainable oceans that support both people and nature.


What You'll Learn

You'll study five core modules during the first two semesters, preparing you for independent research in semester three. The core modules include:

  • Sustainability of Human and Natural Systems
  • Understanding Marine Ecosystems
  • Marine dissertation project planning

How You'll Learn

Delivery and teaching methods include lectures, seminars, practical sessions, personal supervision, and independent study. You'll split your time between the University's city-centre campus, the Dove Marine Laboratory, and the Princess Royal research vessel.


Your Development

You'll develop your research skills with support from post-doctoral scientists, technicians, and academic staff. The marine science research groups are part of extensive national and international networks, including partnerships with organizations such as the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Oceana.


Your Future

This MSc supports a route into PhD-level study, developing the research skills needed for advanced study. Graduates have undertaken various roles, including Scientific Fisheries Observer, Head of Fisheries Management, and Head of Environmental team.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for 2026 entry are £14,200 for home students and £31,000 for international students. Scholarships are available, including a 25% discount on international fees for EU students without settled or pre-settled status.


Entry Requirements

A 2:1 honours degree in a relevant subject, or an international equivalent, is required. Three to six months of relevant practical experience is also necessary. English language requirements include IELTS, Pearson, or Duolingo English Test scores.


How to Apply

Applications are accepted throughout the year, with no closing date. International students are advised to apply at least two months before the course starts. A deposit of £1,500 is required for international students who need a visa to study in the UK.
