Program Overview


It enhances English language skills, subject knowledge, and practical abilities in sketching, drawing, and model construction. Graduates are guaranteed a place on designated undergraduate degrees at Newcastle University and are well-equipped for careers in architecture, design, and construction.

Program Outline


This full-time course runs for 3 or 4 terms and is designed for individuals needing to improve their English language skills and increase their subject knowledge of architecture.


Key Objectives:

  • Develop English language skills within the context of architecture.
  • Enhance subject knowledge of architecture.
  • Gain an introduction to key aspects of architecture such as space, materiality, and aesthetic qualities.
  • Practice skills in sketching, drawing, and constructing physical models.
  • Learn how to research, analyze, and present work effectively.
  • Achieve the International Foundation Certificate (RQF Level 3) upon successful completion.

Outline:

The program is structured as follows:

  • Two to three-dimensional drawing and sketching.
  • Construction of physical models.
  • Introduction to space, materiality, and aesthetic qualities in architecture.
  • Development of research, analysis, and presentation skills.
  • Focus on specific skills and knowledge required for undergraduate architecture programs.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include:

  • Examinations at the end of each semester.
  • Coursework including design portfolios, design projects, sketchbooks, written essays, reports, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, bibliographical searches, oral and video presentations, and problem-solving tasks.

Teaching:

  • 21 hours of teaching per week minimum.
  • Maximum of 16 students per class for English language teaching.
  • Age requirement: 17 years and above.
  • Formal and informal assessment throughout the program.

Careers:

Graduates of the program will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress to undergraduate architecture programs at Newcastle University. They will also be well-prepared for careers in a variety of fields related to architecture, design, and construction.
