  • Architectural Design 1 (20 credits): Develops a contextual and technological understanding of design processes.
  • Includes transferable skills practice such as sketching, drawing, and model making.
  • Architectural Design 2 (20 credits): Builds on Architectural Design 1, further developing design skills and understanding through a comprehensive design project.
  • Architecture History and Theory (20 credits): Provides a general overview of world architecture in its historical context.
  • Understand the implications of sustainable design and the economic effects of materials and structural decisions. Gain knowledge about the most common construction methods, materials, and their properties.
  • English for Academic Purposes (20 credits): Focuses on academic writing, critical reading skills development, and exam and assignment writing preparation.
  • Develops spoken English and listening skills through discussions and group work. Introduces practical skills such as measuring, surveying, documenting, observation and analytical sketching, and orthographic drawing, as well as communication and presentation skills. Introduces computer-aided design (CAD), three-dimensional modelling, and other industry-standard software.

Assessment:

  • Entry to Newcastle University is highly competitive, and students hoping to progress to Newcastle must maintain high standards throughout their course.
  • Grades in the Year One course do not count towards the final degree, but performance determines whether students meet the specified progression grades for direct entry to the chosen degree at the University.
  • Assessment is both formal and informal.

Home/EU Students:

  • A Levels: AAB with a B in Mathematics or a numerate subject.
  • International Baccalaureate: 32 points overall with 17 points at Higher Level including a grade 5 in Mathematics or a numerate Higher Level subject.
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or BTEC Level 3 Diploma (with additional A Level): DDD or Distinction DD, respectively, with Distinction in the relevant subject or a numerate qualification.
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma: Pass with 45 credits at Level 3, including 30 credits at Distinction in a built environment subject and 15 credits at Merit in Mathematics or a numerate subject.

Overseas Students (outside the European Union):

  • International Baccalaureate: 34 points overall with 18 points at Higher level, including grade 6 in a Mathematics or numerate Higher Level subject.
  • A Levels: A AA with an A in Mathematics or another numerate A Level.
  • High School Diploma: Equivalent to A AA at A Level or 34 points in the IB.
  • This typically includes achieving a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.7 or above.
  • Other qualifications: We accept a wide range of other international qualifications.
  • All applicants are also required to have a minimum English Language proficiency level equivalent to IELTS 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in any component.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • IELTS: Minimum overall score of 7.0 with 6.5 in each component (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
  • TOEFL: Minimum score of 90 overall.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Minimum score of 67 overall.
  • CAE: Grade C or better.
  • CPE: Grade C or better.

  • Applicants who are required to take an English language test are encouraged, regardless of their band score or level, to apply for our Pre-sessional English programme.
