Our Research
Research at the Institute of Dentistry is conducted within several research groups, the work of which builds on areas of research excellence at the Institute of Dentistry and complementary expertise at the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian.

- The aim of this theme is to conduct high quality research in oral health utilising the principles of Dental Public Health to improve the oral health of individuals and populations. Areas of research in the Public Health & Health Services include: the study of Oral health in Vulnerable/High Risk groups and Older People, Dental Health Services Research and, Evidence-Based Dentistry.
Experimental & Translational Research
- Microbial Diseases
- Contact: Professor Karolin Hijazi
- Microbial Diseases research at the Institute of Dentistry aims to advance mechanistic knowledge that will inform the development of new strategies to control infective diseases as well as immune disease driven by microbes. Areas of research include: Antimicrobial Resistance, HIV-1, Oral Opportunistic Pathogens and Oral Mucosal Inflammatory Disease.
Aberdeen Global Scholarship
Eligible self-funded international Postgraduate Research Masters' students starting in September 2025 will receive the Aberdeen Global Scholarship.
