Entry Requirements:


Domestic Applicants (including NZ citizens, permanent residents, and Australian citizens):

  • Academic: One of the following:
  • NCEA Level 3 University Entrance with
  • 14 credits in each
  • of three approved subjects;

  • Relevant prior learning or industry experience deemed by Open Polytechnic to be of appropriate standard
  • Relevant qualifications:

  • English: All domestic students must either be NZ citizens or have English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS band 6.0 with no individual band score below 5.5;

International Applicants:

  • 58 credits at achievement (including 14 literacy credits) or NCEA Level 3 University Entrance with 14 credits in each
  • AND
  • English language qualifications
  • English: Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS (academic) with:
  • AND
  • no band lower than 5.5 across all sections.

Additional requirements for offshore overseas students:

  • An official academic reference from a previous educational institute is required.
  • Evidence of completion of an official English Language Test that proves the applicant met the required English requirement before enrolment to be approved;
  • Additionally, Open Polytechnic requires domestic students to be NZ citizens or permanent residents (or hold certain relevant visas) and provide tax resident details upon enrolment. The tool guides potential students through the specific courses they need to take within 3 years based on their qualifications/level of entry in 2 stages for their chosen specialization path.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

Students whose official language is not English must demonstrate their English proficiency by attaining a minimum overall IELTS band score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with no band lower than 5.5 across all sections.
