New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6) (Mechanical Engineering) - Entry Requirements


Entry Requirements:


EU Home Students:

  • National Certificate in Engineering (Level 4) with at least 50 credits at Merit or Excellence Level in mathematics and physics.
  • Completion of NCEA Level 2 in mathematics and physics with at least 60 credits at Merit or Excellence Level.
  • Completion of an approved bridging program.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

International Overseas Students Outside the EU:

  • Completion of an equivalent overseas qualification to the National Certificate in Engineering (Level 4) with a minimum of 50 credits in mathematics and physics.
  • Completion of an English language test score that meets the Open Polytechnic's English Language Entry Requirements for International students (minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5).
  • Completion of an approved bridging program.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Mature Applicants (20 years and above):

  • Mature applicants with no formal qualifications may also be eligible for entry if they can demonstrate relevant knowledge, skills, and experience through an interview or portfolio.

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • Applicants whose first language is not English must meet one of the following English Language proficiency requirements:
  • Minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5.
  • Minimum overall TOEFL iBT score of 80 with a minimum writing score of 21.
  • Completion of an Open Polytechnic approved English Language pathway program.
  • Completion of Year 13 NCEA with a minimum of 6 credits in English at Level 3.

Additional Requirements:

  • All applicants are required to submit a personal statement outlining their reasons for wanting to study engineering and their career aspirations.
  • Applicants are also required to submit two referee reports, one from a previous teacher and one from a current employer (if applicable).
  • For students wanting to complete their Engineering Practice component, they will require access to a local trainer and an engineering workshop.
