Program Overview

The Finance program at St. Francis Xavier University is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) affiliated university program that exposes students to current theories and applied finance skills. The curriculum covers a wide variety of topics, including investments, portfolio management, derivatives, corporate finance, personal finance, international finance, and more.

Why Study Finance at StFX?

The Finance program appeals to students interested in understanding financial markets, such as the stock and bond markets, and who wish to learn more about making investment decisions at both the corporate and personal levels. Students learn practical skills using the state-of-the-art Finance Lab in their class assignments. Extracurricular opportunities include managing a portfolio worth over a half million dollars (Xaverian Capital) or competing in finance case competitions (e.g., CFA Investment Research Challenge, CFA Ethics Challenge Case Competition). The program prepares students to work in industry or pursue higher studies in finance.

In the first and second year, students take core courses shared among each of the Faculty of Business disciplines. This allows them to build a strong foundation and explore what the various disciplines have to offer.

StFX is located in Mi’kma’ki, the unceded ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaw people. The Mi'kmaw name for Antigonish is Nalikitquniejk, meaning ‘place where branches are torn off.’
