Program Outline
Degree Overview:
Objectives: The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (H) Post Compulsory Education (PCE) is a two-year program designed for teachers who are already working in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The PCE program aims to:
- equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to become reflective practitioners
- support participants in developing their teaching and learning practices
- provide participants with a critical understanding of the wider social, political, economic, and cultural context of the Post Compulsory Education sector
- enable participants to explore contemporary educational initiatives within their subject specialism
- support participants in developing their subject-specific pedagogic skills and knowledge
Program Description: The PCE program is a part-time program delivered over two years. Participants typically attend taught sessions once a week at one of several partner colleges across the West Midlands. The program is characterized by a strong culture of teaching and learning and a focus on critical inquiry.
Participants will engage in a Community of Practice facilitated by a strong network of experienced tutors and mentors.
The program is designed to meet the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Professional Standards and has at its heart a model of Critical Reflective Practice. This model facilitates an ongoing professional dialogue between student, mentor, and tutor, empowering participants to become the best teachers they can be. The PCE program has received a Grade 2: Good in the Ofsted Inspection March 2013.

- Curriculum, Policy and Practice: This module examines the social, political, economic, and cultural context of the Post Compulsory Education sector. It critically reviews the impact of current government policy and analyzes contemporary educational initiatives.
- Introduction to Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector: This module offers an overview of the Lifelong Learning Sector and explores the impact of current government policy on the sector. It examines different teaching and learning approaches and emphasizes the importance of critical reflection in teaching practice.
- Professional Development: These modules provide participants with the opportunity to develop and broaden their pedagogic skills and knowledge in relation to all aspects of the teaching and learning experience. They focus on critical reflection and empower participants to become effective and confident teachers.
- Subject Specialism and E-Learning: This module explores the use of technology and e-learning in specific subject areas. It encourages participants to critically examine policy and practice developments in the use of technology and explore the implications for their teaching practice.
- Subject Specific Studies: This module allows participants to reflect on how to develop effective schemes of work and identify and address challenging pedagogic issues within their subject field. It encourages participants to draw on a range of resources and engage in discussions with colleagues to enhance their subject-specific knowledge and skills.

Module: Subject Specialism and E-Learning Year 2 (6PC011):

Assessment: The PCE program uses a variety of assessment methods, including:
- Essays: Participants will write essays on topics related to the modules they are studying.
- Presentations: Participants will give presentations on their research and findings.
- Portfolios: Participants will create portfolios of their work, which will be assessed by their tutors.
- Reflective Practice: Participants will engage in reflective practice throughout the program, which will be assessed by their tutors. The assessment criteria used in the program are based on the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Professional Standards.
Teaching: The PCE program is taught by a team of experienced tutors and mentors.
