Program Overview


The Latin/Classics Language Education program prepares students to teach Latin in grades 7-12. The program emphasizes developing strong language skills, knowledge of Roman culture and civilization, and effective teaching methods. The program consists of two parts: a subject area major in Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS) and a Professional Education component. Students who complete the program are prepared to teach Latin in a variety of settings, including public schools, private schools, and colleges.

  • Students take four courses in Intermediate Latin, followed by one course in Topics in Advanced Latin.
  • Literature: Students choose at least nine credits from a selection of courses on classical mythology, Latin literature, and Greek literature.
  • Culture and Civilization: Students choose at least 12 credits from a selection of courses on Roman civilization, ancient history, and early Christianity.

  • CAMS 1123 Intermediate Latin I (or equivalent):
  • This course covers the basics of Latin grammar and vocabulary.
  • CAMS 1124 Intermediate Latin II (or equivalent): This course continues the study of Latin grammar and vocabulary, with a focus on reading Latin texts.
  • CAMS 3102 Topics in Advanced Latin (or equivalent): This course explores various advanced topics in Latin language and literature.
  • CAMS 3221 Survey of Classical Latin Literature: This course surveys major works of Latin literature from the Roman Republic to the Late Empire.
  • CAMS 3224 Vergil and the Roman Epic: This course focuses on the works of the Roman poet Vergil.
  • CAMS 3225 Latin Drama: This course explores the works of Roman playwrights such as Plautus and Terence.
  • CAMS 3226 Latin Lyric Poetry: This course examines the works of Roman lyric poets such as Catullus and Horace.
  • CAMS 3227 Latin Historical Prose: This course studies works of Latin historians such as Caesar and Livy.
  • CAMS 3232 Medieval Latin: This course explores the use of Latin in the Middle Ages.
  • CAMS 3241 WGreek and Roman Epic: This course compares Greek and Roman epic poems.
  • CAMS 3242 WGreek and Roman Drama: This course compares Greek and Roman plays.
  • CAMS 3244 Ancient Fictions: This course examines ancient novels and other fictional works.
  • CAMS 3245 Ancient World in Cinema: This course explores the portrayal of the ancient world in film.
  • CAMS 3326 Ancient Rome: Emperors and Barbarians: This course covers the history of Rome from the reign of Augustus to the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
  • CAMS 3330/3330W Palestine Under the Greeks and Romans: This course examines the history of Palestine under Greek and Roman rule.
  • CAMS 3335 The Early Christian Church: This course explores the history and development of the early Christian Church.
  • CAMS 3340 World of the Later Roman Empire: This course examines the political, social, and cultural changes that occurred in the later Roman Empire.

  • CAMS 3102 Topics in Advanced Latin can be repeated multiple times as long as the topic varies.
  • Students are encouraged to complete a maximum number of courses in their major language and seek opportunities to develop their control of the written language.
  • Studying abroad is also highly recommended.
