Program Outline

Outline:

In part 2 of the French Beyond Beginners program, students consolidate their existing knowledge of adjectives, superlatives, and comparatives, and are introduced to direct and indirect pronouns. They work on their pronunciation of difficult sounds, including stem-changing verbs, clusters with l, and the silent h. Over 10 weeks, students learn in small groups using a variety of interactive teaching styles, including role-play and group work. The focus is on applying learning to scenarios encountered in everyday life and improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

Teaching:

Classes meet one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks. Lessons are small, diverse, and taught by highly-qualified French natives who are also esteemed members of the London University faculty. The learning environment is designed to be relaxed and emphasizes practical application of skills. All City language courses are designed to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. In addition to classroom-based teaching, the program utilizes digital learning platforms like Moodle to access class content and lesson plans. Newspapers, audio, and video clips are used in class to improve language skills and gain insight into French culture and current affairs.

Other:

This course is ideal for individuals who have completed part 1 of the Beyond Beginners syllabus, have a rusty GCSE French qualification, or have 80 hours of formal study. Students should already possess basic French knowledge, including the ability to:

  • Discuss weather and seasons
  • Describe places
  • Express likes and dislikes
  • Use common irregular verbs and interrogatives
  • Form basic relative clauses using qui and que
  • Utilize present tense and passé composé
  • Students are required to attend over 70% of the classes to be eligible for an official City, University of London certificate upon completion of the program. Additionally, there are comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts for homework. Instructors assess student progress throughout the term through classroom participation and homework assignments.
