Content Coursework Requirements:
To ensure comprehensive content knowledge and meet certification requirements, students might need to take additional content coursework beyond the core curriculum. The M.A.T. program curriculum comprises four primary components:
Content Core:
24 credits covering content area foundations, methods, and internships.
Field Experience:
Integrated throughout the program, offering opportunities for practical teaching experiences.
Clinical Experience:
A full-time, two-semester internship (100 days) focusing on comprehensive teaching experience.
EdTPA Portfolio:
A national teacher performance assessment required for certification.
Field Experience:
- Early childhood: Semester-long field experience with a three-credit study group for three semesters. Requires spending three hours on two mornings a week in the field (minimum of 72 hours per semester).
- Elementary: Field experiences incorporated into methods and reading courses.
- Secondary: Field experiences built into coursework, including a practicum course. This may include tutoring, classroom observations, small group teaching, and practice teaching.
Clinical Experience:
- Full-time internship spanning two semesters (ideally 100 days).
- Focuses on gaining comprehensive teaching experience.
- Candidate may take methods courses during Phase I of the internship.
Assessment:
The program utilizes EdTPA, a national teacher performance assessment, as a requirement for MSDE certification. Teacher candidates submit a portfolio during Phase II of the Internship, providing evidence of their ability to plan, teach, and assess a sequence of lessons.
Other:
