Master of Social and Community Leadership
The Master of Social and Community Leadership (MSCL) is a postgraduate program designed to develop innovative solutions for social and community change. The program focuses on leadership, systems thinking, innovation, ethics, and evaluation, providing students with the knowledge and skills to drive positive change in a complex world.
Programme Overview
The MSCL program is a 180-point postgraduate degree that can be completed full-time in 18 months or part-time over two years. The program is designed to be flexible, with options for face-to-face and online study. Students can choose from a range of elective courses across the University, including the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, Arts and Education, and Science.
Programme Structure
The MSCL program has two main structures: Taught Masters and Research Masters.
Taught Masters
The Taught Masters program consists of:
- Four core advanced taught courses (120 points) focusing on leadership, systems thinking, innovation, ethics, and evaluation.
- 60 points from a range of elective courses across the University.
- The option to combine face-to-face and online courses.
Research Masters
The Research Masters program consists of:
- Two core courses (30 points): Innovation, Design and Evaluation, and Leadership, Ethics, Systems.
- A Research Methods course (30 points): Research Methodologies or Mori and Indigenous Research.
- A 90-point research thesis project.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the MSCL program include:
- A Bachelor's degree with a GPA of 5.0 or higher in 60 points above Stage II.
- Alternatively, a relevant professional qualification, equivalent to a Bachelor's degree of at least 360 points, with at least two years of relevant professional experience.
- International students must have an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no bands less than 6.0.
Fees and Scholarships
The tuition fees for the MSCL program are:
- NZ$9,574.80 for domestic students.
- NZ$43,674 for international students.
- There is also a Student Services Fee of $9.44 per point, estimated at $1,132.80 for full-time study. Scholarships and awards are available for eligible students.

The key dates for the MSCL program include:
- Application closing dates: 1 December for Summer School, 8 December for Semester One, and 8 June for Semester Two.
- Start dates: 6 January for Summer School, 3 March for Semester One, and 21 July for Semester Two.
