Program Overview
Master of Fine Arts MFA
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programme provides an opportunity to advance both your creative practice and research abilities. The MFA is open to students who have completed an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts. This degree is also open to anyone who has completed a university degree, who is able to demonstrate their professional experience through a portfolio that demonstrates their practice as an artist.
Programme Overview
The Master of Fine Arts programme is designed to help students develop their independent, research-informed practice in contemporary art. The programme is available in two formats: a 180-point master's degree and a 120-point master's degree.
Programme Structure
The 180-point master's degree consists of:
- 15 points of Research Methodologies
- 45 points of studio, theory, and workshop courses
- 120 points of Research Portfolio or 90 points of Studio and 30 points of Studio Research Essay
The 120-point master's degree consists of:
- 120 points of Research Portfolio or 90 points of Studio and 30 points of Studio Research Essay
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the 180-point MFA, students must have:
- A grade point average of 4.5 or higher in 60 points above Stage II within their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
- A portfolio that demonstrates their practice as an artist
- Relevant experience
To be eligible for the 120-point MFA, students must have:
- A grade point average of 4.5 or higher in 60 points above Stage II within their Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) or Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Arts degree
- A portfolio that demonstrates their practice as an artist
- Relevant experience
Further Programme Requirements
Students who need to provide a portfolio as part of their application must submit:
- A selection of up to 12 creative works that demonstrate visual sensibility, creativity, and technical skill
- A written statement that addresses their reasons for wanting to participate in the programme and how they see this contributing to their future career aspirations
- A practice-based curriculum vitae that covers their previous art training, experience, and practice
Fees and Scholarships
The tuition fees for the Master of Fine Arts programme are:
- NZ$11,545.20 for domestic students
- NZ$52,843 for international students
There are also scholarships and awards available to students.
