About Program

Program Overview

The Pre-Entry Applied Health Sciences program at SIT2LRN Distance Learning campus provides foundational knowledge and skills in human anatomy, biology, and professional conduct for students aspiring to pursue higher-level health sciences programs. Through online assessments and written assignments, learners gain a comprehensive understanding of normal and abnormal human structures and functions, ethical considerations, teamwork, and cultural influences in healthcare settings. Successful completion prepares students for further studies in Level 4 Applied Health Sciences programs, potentially leading to careers in health-related fields.

Program Outline

This program seems designed to prepare learners for future studies in related Level 4 programs, potentially leading towards health & science-oriented degrees like Nursing, Sport & Exercise, Massage, or Midwifery (unavailable at SIT).

  • This program involves a series of papers focusing on human anatomy & function, human biology, measurements in health contexts, ethical & professional conduct, teamwork aspects, and cultural influences in healthcare settings with a focus on mental health considerations.
  • Successful learners will gain the foundational knowledge & skills needed to further pursue applied health sciences at the Level 4 level and higher.

Paper breakdown

  • AHS100: "Introduction to normal human structure and function..." (8 credits)
  • This paper explores normal physiological structures and functions in a health environment.
  • Successful participants can define "anatomy" vs. "physiology", describe musculoskeletal & related systems with their normal workings.
  • (8 credits)
  • AHS101 & AHS102: "Introduction...Abnormal" (8 credits & "Human biology..."
  • These papers address abnormal structures & functions, philosophies surrounding them, and various intervention possibilities.

AHS102

dives into human systems & their structures/functions. Participants can then describe integration between these systems. (10 credits for AHS102)

  • AHS103:
  • This paper focuses on basic System International (Si) & other units of measurement in this field, alongside mathematical skills necessary for calculations & problem-solving using formulas (10 credits).
  • AHS105:
  • > Both papers concentrate on important areas of professional conduct within applied areas of healthcare:
  • > 106: Deals with ethical behavior & consumer rights as pertain healthcare & disability contexts, adhering to relevant legislation & codes of conduct that influence patient care & decision rights.
  • > In AHS 105, Participants learn what constitutes effective teamwork, identifying barriers & potential mitigation strategies; they also self-assess their role & actions aiding team goal realization.
  • AHS104 "Ethics..."& AHS107: "Cultural..." (8+6 credits) > Again, focus lies upon professional conduct;
  • >104: Explores ethical behavior and consumer rights in contexts of applied health, disability and community settings as per relevant legislation and Codes of Conduct.
  • The paper also deals with ethical treatment in healthcare involving both mainstream & complementary practices.
  • > AHS407 examines the learners own cultural identity alongside others to then grasp how each impacts individual work practices within applied health domains; additionally, it covers policies & processes used to handle culturally associated issues in this arena.
  • AHS108: "Mental..." (3 credits): Explores factors associated with mental health & related challenges. Learners identify factors that contribute to either well-being or, conversely, potential issues/vulnerability.
  • It is recommended to estimate roughly 10 hours worth of study per 1 credit within your chosen intake period.

Teaching:

Facilitator access is generally by e-mail, with responses aimed within 48 hours during weekdays. the pre entry-level program would set graduates to then further their studies with Applied Health (Level 4) programs. This would equip them to enter relevant domains within health fields or possibly pursue additional study at Diploma / Degree levels if their chosen specialization requires such higher education.

Other:

  • This program requires participants have their computer & Internet covered; utilizing SIT online Webmail & Blackboard® learning platform is mandatory.
  • Progress reports typically go out
  • 8 weeks post-intake end.
