Program Overview
The Beginners-Improvers Welding program at SIT is designed for individuals with little to no welding experience or those seeking to enhance their skills. The course covers MMAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding techniques, excluding aluminum welding. Students are required to provide their own safety gear and pay a $600 fee. Enrollment is limited to 12 students, and the program is not government-funded.

Course Content:
- This course is designed for people who have very basic to no welding skills, or those who wish to improve their welding skills.
- Facilities for MMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) are available.
- The Beginners / Improvers course does not include aluminium welding.
- This course is run with the NZS2980 course and combined they are limited to 12 places.
- Students need to bring in their passport or birth certificate if they haven't enrolled at SIT before.
Materials:
- Students need to bring overalls, safety boots, and safety glasses.
Other:
- All courses are subject to sufficient enrollments.

Entry Requirements:
Domestic Students:
- NCEA Level 2: You must have achieved NCEA Level 2 or equivalent with a minimum of 12 credits in three subjects, including at least 6 credits in English and 6 credits in Mathematics.
- Other qualifications: If you do not have NCEA Level 2, you may be eligible for entry based on other qualifications, such as a completed apprenticeship or relevant work experience. You will need to provide evidence of your qualifications and experience to SIT for assessment.
International Students:
- Academic qualifications: You must have completed a recognized secondary school qualification, such as an International Baccalaureate Diploma or an A-level qualification. The specific requirements will vary depending on your country of origin.
- English language proficiency: You must demonstrate that you have the necessary English language skills to succeed in your studies. This can be done by providing evidence of a qualification such as IELTS or TOEFL, or by completing an English language test at SIT.
- You must be able to provide evidence of your identity and residency status.
Language Proficiency Requirements:
- Domestic Students: You must have achieved NCEA Level 2 English or equivalent.
- International Students: You must have an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no band score lower than 5.5.
