Program Overview
The Music with Foundation program at Durham University is a four-year program designed for students from underrepresented groups in Higher Education. The program focuses on developing essential music skills, knowledge, and understanding through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and practical classes. Students are expected to be self-motivated and independent learners with a strong commitment to their studies. The program provides a supportive environment that fosters students' personal, academic, and musical development.
Program Outline
Structure:
- Year 1 (Foundation):
- 120 academic credits
- 20 hours of taught content and 10 hours of tutorial/seminar support for every 15 credits
- 100 hours of self-directed study for every 15 credits
- Modules:
- Concepts, Methods, and Theories in Arts and Humanities
- Scholarship in Higher Education (Extended)
- Advanced Scholarship in Higher Education for Arts, Business, and Social Sciences
Teaching:
- High-quality teaching and learning environment
- Supportive and productive atmosphere
- Encourages self-awareness and reflective practice
- Mixture of lectures, tutorials/workshops, and practical classes
- Up to 16 contact hours per week with additional independent study
- Small classes with emphasis on individual needs
- Greater emphasis placed on independent study and individual projects towards the end of the year
Other:
- The program is designed for students from under-represented groups in Higher Education.
- Students must have the potential to achieve the standard for admission to Durham, but who, because of educational disadvantage or disruption, might not meet the standard entry qualifications.

The tuition fees for 2025/26 academic year have not yet been finalised, they will be displayed here once approved. The tuition fees shown for home students are for one complete academic year of full time study and are set according to the academic year of entry. Fees for subsequent years of your course may rise in line with an inflationary uplift as determined by the government. The tuition fees shown for overseas and EU students are for one complete academic year of full time study, are set according to the academic year of entry, and remain the same throughout the duration of the programme for that cohort (unless otherwise stated).
