Develop expertise in demography to advance your graduate studies or further your career with the Certificate of Graduate Study in Demography at UAlbany. In this program, you’ll learn how population processes—fertility, mortality, and migration—are transforming societies, and apply this knowledge to gain analytical skills.


With the expertise you acquire through coursework and an optional internship, you’ll be prepared for wide-ranging opportunities in academia as well as career possibilities in public and private sector fields, including business analytics, marketing, consulting, economics, sociology, social work, criminal justice, public administration, geography, and urban planning.

You will gain the theoretical, substantive, and methodological knowledge of how population processes operate in societies and how they interrelate with other social processes.


  • 18 credits plus one graduate-level statistics course:
    • Core Courses:
      • Introduction to Demography
      • Demographic Techniques
    • Special Topics Courses:
      • Two Special Topics in Demography courses OR
      • One Special Topics in Demography course and one Demography Internship
    • Demography Electives:
      • Two additional demography-related substantive or methods courses in any field
    • Statistics:
      • One graduate-level statistics course in a related field
