Overview
The Journalism (Broadcast) program at the University of Salford is a three-year undergraduate degree that focuses on developing students' skills and techniques in broadcast journalism. The program is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) and covers both traditional and new media to prepare students for the reality of working as a professional broadcast journalist.
Course Details
Year One
- Introduction to Journalism: Students study and discuss the purpose, ethics, and culture of journalism, and are introduced to key journalism models and theories.
- Audio and Video Journalism: Storytelling: Seasoned broadcast professionals teach students how to produce audio and video journalism content.
- Essential Reporting: Students learn how to source and produce stories, providing them with fundamental editorial and technical skills.
- Law and Ethics: Students gain a basic understanding of the legal, regulatory, and ethical frameworks in which all journalists work.
- Multimedia Reporting: Students develop as networked journalists by developing their own blog and exploring the multitude of digital platforms available to source and output journalistic content.
Year Two
- Critical Journalism Studies: Students develop their understanding of the ways in which technological, social, political, and cultural changes have impacted journalism.
- Broadcast Journalism: Students are introduced to more advanced techniques in editing and camerawork, live reporting, and studio skills across radio, TV, and online platforms.
- Broadcast Newsdays: Students work in teams to create and broadcast a range of news bulletins, packages, and programs across radio and television.

Requirements
- Applicant profile: Students should have experience in journalism and multimedia content creation, and be able to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in their personal statement.

- GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) is preferred but not essential
