Overview
This online e-learning programme will enable you to critically review and apply the relevant concepts, knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to professionally care for a patient with gastrointestinal disease. You can take this course as a single module for continuing professional development or as part of the full PgCert Gastrointestinal Disorders programme.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
- Assimilate, synthesize, and systematically apply the relevant normal physiological mechanisms and the related anatomical and pathophysiological processes that underpin gastrointestinal disorders.
- Critically appraise and apply the evidence base that underpins the care management of patients with gastrointestinal disease.
- Critically evaluate the knowledge and skills needed for the comprehensive assessment, planning of care, delivery and evaluation of care for patients with gastrointestinal disease.
- Critically consider and evaluate the contribution of nursing and other professional groups in the management and delivery of effective care to patients with gastrointestinal disease.
- Examine and analyse the factors influencing health care for patients with gastrointestinal disease (e.g. cost, efficiency, quality and resources available).
What will I be doing?
This is an online e-learning programme supported by face to face, screen cast o-matic, Skype, Collaborate telephone, email, academic support. The assessment process reflects the learning outcomes of the curriculum and will emphasise not only recall of knowledge but understanding, application, problem-solving, evaluation and critique. The programme is professionally-orientated, and as such, there is a strong focus on current authentic assessment by field specific practitioners.
Assessment
A retrospective account of a patient journey which demonstrates a critical evaluation of the knowledge gained during the module in order to care for a patient with gastrointestinal disease, utilising relevant up-to-date evidence.

This module lasts for one semester. It is suitable for appropriately qualified healthcare professionals actively connected to clinical practice wishing to enhance their clinical skills.

You must have completed a relevant healthcare undergraduate programme and be an appropriately qualified healthcare professionals actively connected to clinical practice e.g.
- Qualified nurse
- Dietitian

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.
Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
