Overview
This module is aimed at registered healthcare professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and competence in contraceptive and sexual health within a community setting.
Course Details
All about the course
This module aims to prepare you to safely and competently deliver sexual health care and advice within a community setting. You will consider contemporary issues affecting sexual and reproductive health.
- Anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system
- History taking
- STIs – transmission, prevalence, and treatment
- Contraceptive methods and rationale for use
- Contraceptive and sexual health needs in specific client groups
- Legal and ethical issues in practice
What will I be doing?
Teaching
During this programme, a range of teaching and learning strategies will be used, appropriate for Level 7 study. Teaching will foster self-directed learning, focusing on the acquisition of specialist knowledge and the development of creative and critical thinking.
This course is delivered part-time on Thursdays for a duration of seven weeks.

Assessment
Assessment will be via a written examination.

Applying for post qualifying Health and Social Care single modules
All applications for post qualifying health and social care modules are made directly to the University.
Self-funded applications
If you are self-funding a programme of study or single module, please complete the appropriate application form and send directly to the University.
Standard entry requirements
- Previous study and experience: You should have an undergraduate degree in a related discipline.
- You will be a Registered Nurse, ideally working within a General Practice Nurse role.
Alternation entry requirements
- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL): We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
- Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
