Overview

The Business Management with Finance undergraduate programme at Salford Business School combines theory with professional experience, through business simulations, live projects, and professional placements. This industry-led course equips students with the essential skills for a successful career in financial management and builds the business experience required for general management positions.

Year One

  • Digital and Business Skills: Introduces a range of digital tools for academia and the workplace, including important business skills such as management, collaboration, and teamwork.
  • Understanding Organisations: Provides an introduction to the key functions of business and is an opportunity to see how they work.
  • Financial Crises and Symptoms: Covers topics such as the birth of money (and credit) and bank, historical development of financial markets, evolution of financial exchanges and regulations.
  • Data Analysis for Business: Provides a grounding in the key skills needed to understand and use data, developing an understanding of the concepts required for the use and interpretation of the quantitative methods used to analyse business data.
  • The Future of Business: Explores the opportunities for business in the future, starting with a grounding in the business context, gaining an understanding of economics and the digital environment, including the role of the digital economy.
  • Business Finance in Practice: A practical experience module using a business simulation tool, giving students a chance to get into the heart of an organisation.

Year Two

  • Professional Development: Enables students to plan and carry out appropriate professional development activities to increase their employability and performance.
  • Financial Markets and Institutions: Teaches the general concepts of financial markets and institutions, looking at various economic indicators and their influence on the markets.
  • Project Management: Takes a detailed look at various aspects of project management through a variety of means such as lectures and practical seminars informed by research and industrial collaborations.
  • International Finance: Prepares students for a career in an international environment by broadening their economic and financial knowledge and helping to develop the skills required to manage international financial databases.
  • Live Project in Finance: A chance to get hands-on experience inside a real organisation, working in teams to help one of our partner organisations develop a solution to a current finance problem.
  • Business Intelligence and Dashboards: Introduces students to a variety of methods of analysis for management decision making, which will be practiced on real data sets aligned to students’ named degree titles.

Optional Modules

  • Legal Aspects of Business: Teaches some of the key aspects of law and how these impact upon business.
  • Applied Econometrics: Equips students with the analytical skills required to handle and analyse business, financial and economic data using basic econometric methods.
  • Business Accounting: Introduces some fundamentals of basic financial and management accounting, learning to understand the content of financial statements and the accountancy practices required to prepare these statements.
  • Contemporary Issues in International Marketing: Looks at the issues affecting current marketing in a global setting and the impact this has on the wider business environment.
  • The Digital Workplace: Helps students gain an understanding of the application of digital technologies in organisations, developing a critical awareness of the relationship between people and the workplaces of the future.
  • Internship: A short internship, whether paid or unpaid, is invaluable for students to develop and demonstrate their skills in the real-world.

Year Three

  • Business Ethics and Sustainability: Equips students with an appreciation and in-depth understanding of the implications of Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability within national and international organisations.
  • Business Finance: Explores concepts such as raising capital, capital markets and the capital structure of firms, evaluating the processes of mergers and takeovers and analysing the risks in international finance.
  • Leadership and Management in Finance: Helps students develop their leadership skills and prepare them for their future career, exploring theory, behaviour, people management and leadership within an organisational context, applying this to the finance sector.
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Gives students the opportunity to undertake an enterprise project for an internal or external sponsor on a topic of common interest, or use this opportunity to undertake in-depth research for their own project.
  • Strategic Management: Acquires an organisation-wide perspective through exploring strategy techniques and processes within the global environment, preparing students for a career in business and management.

  • Big Data Analytics: Teaches a range of established Big Data and analytics techniques and the value they provide to organisations.
  • Climate Change and Sustainability in Business: Provides a background on issues pertaining to climate change from a multidisciplinary lens, studying the science and policy of climate change, international climate finance, energy policy, business and sustainability and environmental policy.
  • Information Security Management: Understands the management and protection of digital information across various technologies, managing data security risk, cybersecurity risk, data policy in contemporary digital technologies, the strategic aspects of information security management and digital forensics and the legal, ethical and professional concerns in data security.
  • Internship: A short internship, whether paid or unpaid, is invaluable for students to develop and demonstrate their skills in the real-world.
  • Investment Management: Provides an introduction to the investment environment, explaining risk and how investors can manage risk, time value of money, portfolio management and the relationship between risk and return.
  • Technology Innovation: Develops awareness and understanding of the use of digital technologies and their role in digital transformation, examining contemporary issues in this area and exploring the impact that digital technology had had on business and will have in the future.

  • Applicant Profile: This course offers excellent scope for any student wanting to start a career in management, finance, marketing and a variety of other different business areas.
  • International Students: We accept qualifications from all around the world. Applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English, with an IELTS score of 6.0 (with no element below 5.5).
  • Standard Entry Requirements:
    • GCSE: Maths and English at grade C / grade 4 or above.
    • UCAS Tariff points: 104 – 112 UCAS tariff points from A Levels or equivalent.
    • A level: BCC - BBC with a minimum of two A2 passes.
    • BTEC National Diploma: DMM.
    • T levels: Merit.
    • Access to HE: Pass with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2.
    • Scottish Highers: 104 - 112 UCAS tariff points.
    • Irish Leaving Certificate: 104 - 112 UCAS tariff points.

    • European Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 60% or above.
