Overview

This course is designed to prepare students for future studies in business and human resource management. The foundation year provides a grounding in business management, preparing students for their future studies. As students progress into their first, second, and third years of study, they will further develop their responsible leadership and strategic thinking.

Foundation Year

  • Foundations of Business: This module introduces key concepts of business and management, looking at what business is (and isn’t). Students will develop an understanding of the key functions used within contemporary businesses and learn about the tools and techniques used in business for analysis and planning.
  • Academic and Personal Skills: This module takes students through how to get to grips with the technology they need to succeed, as well as using the library, how to reference, and how to produce different styles of academic writing.
  • Sustainable Business Development: This module looks at what’s involved in starting up a sustainable business. Students will discover what is needed for long-term business success.
  • Digital Business: This module explains the importance and key elements of digital business. Students will explore how digital business ideas drive technology choices and how those technologies support the development of the business.
  • Business Project: This module brings together everything that students have learned so far on the foundation year. Students will work as part of a team to develop a business idea and pitch it to a panel to gain investment in their start-up.
  • Employability for Life: This module aims to acquire and develop an understanding of the employability skills required to succeed in the chosen industry.

Year One

  • Introduction to Human Resources: This module introduces the distinct contribution that Human Resource Management (HRM) policy and practice makes to both employee and organisation performance and success.
  • Digital and Business Skills: This module introduces a range of digital tools for academia and the workplace. Important business skills such as management, collaboration, and teamwork are fundamental to the module.
  • Understanding Organisations: This module provides an introduction to the key functions of business and is an opportunity to see how they work.
  • HR Business Skills: On this module, students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding, and skills connected with culture and communications within organisations.
  • Data Analysis for Business: In this module, students will be introduced to a variety of data analysis methods, which will be practiced on real-world data sets.
  • The Future of Business: This module explores the opportunities for business in the future, starting with a grounding in the business context. Students will gain an understanding of economics and the digital environment, including the role of the digital economy.

Year Two

  • Professional Development: This module will enable students to plan and carry out appropriate professional development activities to increase their employability and performance.
  • Managing and Coordinating Human Resources: This module aims to offer students a holistic view of the Human Resource Management function and an introduction to managing and coordinating its key functions.
  • Analysis for HRM: This module builds on the data analysis skills that students learned in their first year and gets practical experience of using data to inform HR management decisions.
  • Project Management: During this module, students take a detailed look at various aspects of Project Management through a variety of means such as lectures and practical seminars informed by research and industrial collaborations.
  • Employment Law for Business: This module provides an appreciation of how Employment Law is formulated, identifying those aspects of Employment Law that impact critically upon business practice.
  • Live Project in HRM: This module gives students the opportunity to choose and carry out a piece of independent research within their chosen field of HRM.
